We at SBCC feel an obligation to give back to our community; donating our time and expertise to numerous organizations and communities. Giving back represents a core SBCC value and one we encourage in each and every employee, associate, and business contact.

Through a singular and collective focus with like-minded individuals, SBCC and its employees help students and young professionals lead productive lives and become great leaders for the next generation. Our philosophy is to support education and the communities where these students and young professionals live, work, study and play. To help cultivate new philanthropic role-models who will inspire others to give back and to create a high-profile, mutually supportive charitable community that works together, SBCC has developed the following:

MENTORING

NAUDL-SF-10-SBCCGROUPThe value of a good mentor is immeasurable. Good mentors help to empower the leaders of tomorrow with information that will prove valuable down the line. Moreover, the best mentors introduce their new recruits to others within an organization and industry. As time goes on, professional mentoring often becomes a two-way street by offering benefits to both teacher and student.

Pro Bono Advisory

SBCC strives to make a positive impact where information can be shared, individuals can be empowered, and a difference made. SBCC has been pleased to contribute pro bono advisory work to municipalities, industry associations, foundations and academic institutions, among others. Projects have included building strategies, addressing problems, designing or re-designing financial transactions, and hedges, assisting with best practices and providing education. If you are in need of pro bono advisory work please contact us.

GIVING TO ORGANIZATIONS

SBCC strongly encourages its employees to contribute their time and skills to advisory boards at educational institutions, non-profit organizations and institutes that promote thought leadership and otherwise assist society. SBCC is proud to have supported employees who have devoted time to The National Academies, The National Science Foundation, The Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics, New York University, Columbia University, Yale University, and Stanford University, among others.

FISCal (Financial Interns Supporting California)

STANFORD UNIVERSITY

FISCal is a student-launched initiative that seeks to create experiential learning opportunities for Stanford students in public financial management in California’s state and local governments.  The idea of the Stanford FISCal initiative grew out of a team project for Tanya Beder’s Stanford University graduate course on policy and strategy issues in financial engineering. In this team project, the students that piloted the program examined the use of financial innovations in American municipal finance. One key issue identified was a lack of opportunities for university students to be exposed to financial decision-making in state and local governments. FISCal’s goal is to help create such opportunities by starting a service-learning program for Stanford students.

During the 2013 summer, the program offered its first summer internships to a small number of Stanford students to assist local Bay Area governments.  During the following summers, the program continued to offer up to 10 internships in the Bay Area and beyond.
